Masculine or Feminine in portuguese?
1. Generally, feminine nouns and adjectives end in ‘-a’. Examples:
- a casa (the house), a mesa (the table), a caneta (the pen), a amiga (the friend), a porta (the door), a família (the family).
2. Generally, masculine nouns and adjectives end in “-o”. Examples:
- o livro (the book), o queijo (the cheese), o sapato (some shoes), o rio (the river), o amigo (the friend), o vinho (the wine)
3. But… there are nouns that end in “-o” and are feminine. Examples:
- a mão (the hand), a foto (a fotografia) (the photo), a moto (the motorcycle), a rádio (the radio)
4. There are nouns that end in “-a” and are masculine (they usually end in: -á; -ema; -oma;). Examples:
- o sofá (the sofa), o problema (the problem), o sintoma (the symptom)
5. Nouns that end in “-or” are usually masculine: Examples:
- o amor (the love), o professor (the teacher), o elevador (the elevator), o senhor (the sir / Mr.), o cantor (the singer)
But there are also words that end in “-or” and are feminine: Examples: a dor (the pain), a cor (the color), a flor (the flower)
6. Nouns ending in: -dade, -agem, -ssão, -ção, -são are usually feminine. Examples:
- a faculdade (the college / university), a mensagem (the message), a sessão (the session), a situação (the situation), a televisão (the television).
