Examples:

• • uma mesa (a table)

• • um livro (a book)

• • umas canetas (some pens)

• • uns sapatos (some shoes)

1. In general, the masculine ends in –o:

Exemplos: um apartamento, um menino, um abraço, um vinho (an apartment, a boy, a hug, a wine)

2. In general, the feminine ends in –a:

Exemplos: uma menina, uma camisa, uma banana (a girl, a shirt, a banana)

3. There are some masculine nouns that end in -a (among these masculine nouns, many end in: -á, -ema, -oma

Exemplos: um dia, um chá, um sistema, um diploma (a day, a tea, a system, a diploma)

4.There are some feminine nouns that end in -o (among these feminine nouns, many end in: -o, -ão

5. Nouns that end in -or are usually masculine:
