Why is Brazilian Portuguese different from THE Portuguese spoken in Portugal?

1º. Any living language is always constantly changing and evolving.

2º. A language spoken within the same country also has many linguistic variations due to a variety of factors, including geographical, location, and differences in age, social background or gender.

3º. In the case of the Portuguese spoken in Brazil and in Portugal, due to the distance between the two countries, and their differing historical influences each has developed its own ways of communicating. There are a lot of differences in vocabulary – for example, the first meal of the day in Brazil is café da manhã, while in Portugal, it’s pequeno-almoço. There are also major differences in pronunciation, for example.

In relation to the pronunciation of /r/ – the word rir, is pronounced very differently in each country.

And it’s this wealth of linguistic variation that fascinates us!

Who will you learn from?

Bárbara Sousa

I’m a teacher with a passion for teaching Brazilian Portuguese to foreigners. I’m Brazilian, from the city of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais. A state famous for being the home of pão de queijo or “cheese bread”!

I began my studies with an emphasis on my language, Brazilian Portuguese, in the faculty of language and literature at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. I graduated with a degree in Portuguese and went on to do a master’s in linguistics at the same university.

In 2019, I created Speak Brazil, an online school teaching Brazilian Portuguese as a foreign language. Since then, I’ve helped many students become fluent in Portuguese.

Bárbara Gama

I’m a teacher of European Portuguese as a foreign or second language. I’m Portuguese, from Porto, but I’ve been living in Lisbon for five years.

I did my master’s degree in Portuguese as a second/foreign language in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities at the University of Porto.

After graduating, I lived and worked in East Timor where I taught Portuguese at the National University. I currently work as a Portuguese teacher at a German college and teach Erasmus classes at the Lisbon School of Education (ESELx).

I collaborated with Bárbara Sousa on the creation of the material for the course Descubra as diferenças: português do Brasil e de Portugal.

Does the course have a certificate?

Yes. After watching all the lessons, you can download your certificate of achievement from the Hotmart platform.

I’VE PAID FOR the course BUT I haven't received my access details. What SHOULD I do?
